U of I campus September 26 and 27, 2006
"I have no hope that this memorial will prevent my son's departure to Iraq.
But I do have hope
that it may help some other mother in some other place and in some other time
keep her son or daughter home and safe."

The
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)
will honor fallen National
Guard personnel and Iraqi civilians with its traveling
National Guard Memorial Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost
of War,
which will be on display on the U of I campus September 26 and 27, 2006.
The Eyes Wide Open National Guard Memorial includes over 350 pairs of boots
representing fallen National Guard servicemen and women, and a visual
representation of Iraqi civilian casualties. This exhibit is a part of AFSC’
s nationally touring exhibition Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War.
AFSC, a Quaker international social justice organization, created Eyes Wide
Open to illustrate the lives lost in the war in Iraq. The Eyes Wide Open
exhibit, which first opened in Chicago with 500 pairs of boots in January
2004, continues to grow as the death toll rises. The national exhibit now
includes more than 2,400 pairs of combat boots representing U.S. military
casualties, along with over 3,000 pairs of shoes memorializing a small
fraction of the Iraqi civilians who have been killed in the conflict.
Smaller exhibits are on display in over a dozen states.
